Poker is a card game played worldwide, especially in North America and Europe. Several different variants are based on different rules. However, all games involve betting.
The basic principle is that players bet to compete for the pot. There are different ways to win, including bluffing and catching other players unaware. Typically, a poker game consists of at least three rounds of betting. Some variants also include side pots, which are won by different players.
The first round of betting involves the ante, which is an introductory bet. The player who makes the first bet is called the active player. After the first bet is made, all other players must bet in a similar amount.
Next, the dealer deals cards to each of the active players. This is done clockwise around the poker table. Cards may be dealt face up or face down.
Each active player then chooses a card and discards two or more. A second round of betting follows. During this round, the remaining player collects the pot without revealing his hand.
Players are then required to match the first bet, and they are able to bluff by betting their highest or lowest hand. Once all the players have made their bets, a showdown occurs.
Typically, the hand with the highest hand wins the pot. If there are several players, the pot is split into a side pot and a main pot. Sometimes the pot is awarded to the lowest hand.
